Platypus Viewing

About the Platypus (Ornithorynchus anatinus)

  • Platypus are found in rivers, streams, ponds, dams and lakes throughout eastern Australian and Tasmania.
  • They are one of only two monotremes (egg laying mammals) found in the world - the echidna is the other (both can be spotted here at Platypus Bend Eco Retreat.
  • They breed between August and October in a leafy nest at the end of a long maternity burrow. After approximately 21 days the female will lay one to three thumb-nail sized leathery eggs which are then incubated for about 11 days. The baby will remain in the burrow for approximately 3 months and feed on milk from a glandular patch on the female's skin.
  • The male platypus has a spur on its hind legs which produces potent venom.
  • The platypus eats freshwater shrimp, crayfish, dragonfly larvae, worms, fish and frogs.
  • Best viewing times are early morning and late afternoon however you will see them right throughout the day at Platypus Bend Eco Retreat.
