Lumholtz tree kangaroos
About the Lumholtz Tree-Kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi)
- There are only two species of Tree Kangaroo found in Australia, the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo and the Bennett's Tree Kangaroo
- The Bennett's Tree Kangaroo can only be found in the area between Daintree and Cooktown.
- The Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo can only be found on the Southern Atherton Tablelands.
- They are generally solitary animals although can be seen in family groups in the breeding season.
- They are very territorial and usually range over a relatively small area. They are primarily leaf eaters, however they are opportunistic feeders and will eat fruit and berries.
- The male and female are generally the same colour although the male is usually larger.
- They are nocturnal feeders and spend most of the day perched high up in the trees and can be difficult to spot if the tree is densely foliated, however their very long tail, around one metre, usually hangs straight down and is often the first indicator of their presence as the tree branches don't hang straight down.
